As part of the ongoing revolutionary process in Tunisia, the farmers and agricultural workers of the Jemna oasis call the working class worldwide to act in solidarity in defense of their communal property on the oasis.
The Jemna oasis HISTORICALLY belongs to the farmers, who inheredited it from their ancestors. It was expropriated by the French settlers and, after the independence and the end of the colonization period, by the Tunisian state.
İn the aftermath of the Revolution of 17th December 2010-14th January 2011, the farmers managed to abolish state property of the land after a series of heroic fights. They organised the production and management process of the oasis in a collective way, within the framework of a true solidarity-based micro-economy. They even launched a number of remarkable local initiatives to promote human development in the area, focusing on training, healthcare and infrastructure.
This is the reason why Jemna represents one of the beacons of hope of the Revolution in Tunisia for the poor and deprived of the country as well as of the whole world.
İn a counter-revolutionary attempt to maintain the capitalist order, the Tunisian state is trying to re-expropriate the oasis to give it to local or foreign cronies. This is what may happen to state-owned land, which accounts for approximately 10% of the arable land in Tunisia.
Your solidarity with the farmers and the agricultural workers of Jemna is imperative to support the deprived of the world in all the challenges they are facing.
